A more common term for Chronic Sinusitis may be stuffy nose, difficult breathing, etc. What happens with Chronic Sinusitis is that the nasal passages become inflamed, swollen, and quite warm as well, adding to the discomfort. These conditions can last for 8 weeks and more, appearing on and off, but symptoms are usually most apparent at night when trying to fall asleep.
Chronic Sinusitis has a certain gross factor to it as well. Many of us who have suffered from it have become acquainted with the feeling of discharge emerging from the back of the nose and dripping down the back of the throat. Another uncomfortable symptom is the heavy congestion caused by the swelling of the nose combined with excessive mucus formation in the nose. This leads to difficulty in sleeping since sleeping is most comfortable when you can breathe through your nose. Other symptoms that are less impeding are reduced sense of smell and taste. Some distressful symptoms include pain in the eyes, cheeks, nose and forehead from constant sucking through the nose caused by the heightened pressure in the head.
There may be a number of causes which contribute to your nasal discomfort and suspected Chronic Sinusitis. Some of these may be physical impediments such as Nasal Polyps, a Deviated Septum, or facial trauma. Other causes can be much smaller or even be complicated like Respiratory Tract Infections, Allergies, or eosinophils in your Immune System. Aside from the discomfort of Chronic Sinusitis, there are much more dangerous risk factors with leaving yourself untreated. If you are even slightly asthmatic, it can make you more vulnerable to asthma attacks. All sufferers are at an increased risk for Meningitis, aneurysms and blood clots also leading to increased stroke risk. Finally, your vision may also be vulnerable. Since the nose and eyes are connected, infection can spread to the eyes and lead to decreased vision, temporary and even permanent blindness in extreme cases.
